Demand is still extra-high out of potato-shipping regions ahead of Thanksgiving, but rates from Twin Falls, ID, to Phoenix dropped 27¢ to an average of $2.74/mile. Denver to Houston also took a 42¢ dive at $1.87/mile.
Potato shippers have continued to be busy, and there were big increases on a couple of lanes out of Southern Idaho. All rates below include fuel surcharges and are based on real transactions between brokers and carriers. Twin Falls to Los Angeles rates rose 39¢ to an average of $3.09/mile.
Apart from Idaho, most of the seasonal action is in imports. DAT load boards provide the largest and most trusted digital freight marketplace in the trucking industry, with more than 256 million loads and trucks posted annually, plus insights into current spot market and contract rates based on $60 billion in real transactions.
A shortage of trucks led to high load-to-truck ratios that turned entire states dark green in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, but there were not a lot of loads available in those areas. Hot Markets for the week included Medford, OR; Rapid City, SD; Omaha, NE; Little Rock, AR; Shreveport, LA; and Montgomery, AL.
Some individual markets offered a lot of loads , and trucks were relatively scarce, creating opportunities in Southern and Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington, Southern Idaho, much of Wisconsin and Indiana, and Western Pennsylvania. After rounding, the national average load-to-truck ratio remained the same, at 1.8

Potatoes are still rolling out of Idaho , and we could see renewed pressure on rates. Volumes were down, and more than half of the top 72 reefer lanes saw rates fall, but national average reefer rate added 1¢ to $1.92/mile. There’s still some tree fruit coming in other markets– mostly apples.
Here's some local color: Demand for vans increased in Idaho last week, especially in Twin Falls. Not yet, anyway. But seasonal freight is coming soon, and it should provide welcome relief for carriers after a quiet winter. Rapid City , SD was another Hot Market.
REEFER TRENDS: Idaho lit up the Hot States map last week, and with good reason. One bright spot in the region is Savannah , where rates are rising like a rocket on a selection of regional lanes. Rates also rose on a couple of lanes out of Rock Island , IL and Harrisburg , PA. HOT ROUND TRIP: Savannah to Charlotte and back, 500 miles at $2.57.
Southern Idaho is coming down from its fall harvest peak, but there's still a high number of loads to be found in the Twin Falls, ID, area.
