by Dr. Madhav Durbha I recently read this very interesting book, “Be the Business: CIOs in the new era of IT” by Martha Heller. In the book, the author made several very interesting observations about how the role of a Chief Information Officer is changing in the age of cloud computing, personalization of tech, and the rise of shadow IT. As I was reading the book, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own experience of working with IT organizations over the last two decades I have been in the supply

While I was preparing for an executive meeting at a very large, very complex and dynamic food & beverage company, I was told of an internal conflict between Sales and Operations. From the viewpoint of the team in charge of outbound logistics, this conflict – fortunately collaborative – emanated from two conflicting demands – both in the S&OP process as well as in day-to-day fulfilment.

In any business or trade you need the right tools for the job, and the supply chain business is no different. At every level of supply chain expertise and competitive differentiation you use certain tools, and seek others to move to the next level. In the 2017 Supply Chain Management Executive Conference presentation Exploring the Major Changes in Supply Chain Planning Technology through the Five Stages of Maturity , Gartner analyst Tim Payne described a representative tool for each level of sup
Supply chain excellence. It is easier to say than define. Getting it clear is important. Why? The answer makes or breaks a supply chain leader’s career and defines corporate value. Let’s take an example. When we look at the relative progress of industries within the Technology Value Networks in Table 1, you see a lot of red. The first number in a cell represents the average value for a specific industry for 2010-2016, and the percentage on the second line is a comparison of the average for 2010

by Alexa Cheater Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman, who led the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories in four years in the early ‘90s, may not be the first person you think of when it comes to giving great supply chain advice. One thing the legendary pro athlete does know is leadership. You can’t be a great quarterback without it and that was the topic of his keynote presentation at the recent Gartner Supply Chain Executive Conference.

We talk a lot about globalization in supply chain management, but when you peel back the onion on it, you realize how enormously complex and risky it is to move goods across borders — and if you don’t have the right people, processes, and technologies to effectively manage the process, your ability to move goods across borders can literally come to a halt.
The adoption of advanced analytics has moved at a much slower pace in Asia Pacific compared to Europe or North America. There are innovative firms that are setting the standard for innovation and successful analytics adoption, but as Actionable Intelligence expert Keith B. Order supplies too early, and you’ll have to carry excess inventory for weeks or months. This will put you at risk of inventory deterioration and obsolescence. It can also drive up your storage, cooling, and insurance costs. Order supplies closer to when you’ll actually need them, and you’ll keep inventory costs lower—but you’ll run the risk of having your production grind to a halt because of a simple shipping delay.

So Gartner looked at the numbers and created the Masters category. The criteria in qualifying for the Masters category is any company who has been in the top five rankings for at least seven out of the past 10 years.

This past month I attended our Supply Chain Insights Bootcamp training led by Lora Cecere in Philadelphia and facilitated the first course of a Cross-Company Academy training, End-to-End Supply Chain Orchestration. A new Sales & Operations Planning cycle kicks off today – but there’s a problem. The team alerts the sales rep (who ups his growth predictions), logistics manager (who thinks it’s too low, and raises it again) and financial controller.
The cloud-based solutions and applications are quickly conquering the markets all over the world; they deemed to be highly scalable, easy to manage and cost-effective. Small and middle-sized companies are pushed by the aggressive competition to be more flexible and adaptive. Big enterprises might not be that open to innovations but are hypersensitive to cost and resource savings.
by Dr. Madhav Durbha As supply chain professionals, we can grow insular in our thinking, as on a day-to-day basis we risk confining ourselves narrowly to our domain of responsibility or solving challenges specific to our regions. However, from time to time, it is important to find opportunities to network with our peers from different regions or from different functional domains and learn from each other.
Your supply chain’s key performance indicators support tactical, day-to-day business decisions, so ensuring you are reading them correctly is imperative. The question becomes, “how are you comparing your transportation metrics to what’s happening around you?” If you only focus on the data in your own supply chain, you could be missing the bigger picture, and ultimately, misreading your KPIs.
