Industrie 4.0 is an initiative for digitizing the industrial economy. The “4” refers to a fourth industrial revolution, following steam power, mass production, and then IT and robotic automation. The German government kicked off the initiative with a focus on advanced manufacturing, but businesses are also linking Industrie 4.0 to supply chains. The clearest impact on supply chain planning involves demand.
The Industrial Internet of Things ( IIoT ) has been a major topic among manufacturers and third-party logistics providers ( 3PLs ) for several years. However, the IIoT is beginning to encroach on all aspect of manufacturing and supply chain management for its wide-ranging deployment and application to improving processes. In addition, the IIoT’s nature allows companies to reduce overhead and maximize efficiency without dramatically increasing initial investments.
Well I hate to admit it, but I am *technically* a millennial. (I like to think since I’m on the older side of the generation I’m just a bit wiser.) I worked with millennials when I managed interns in the central planning group at my last company. I have also recruited, interviewed, and trained many younger employees. I don’t like to admit I’m a millennial because they have quite a few negative connotations associated with them.
by Dr. Madhav Durbha I enjoy attending conferences. They give me the opportunity to reflect, reconnect and recharge. One conference I recently attended is the Gartner Supply Chain Executive conference in Phoenix, Arizona. With a lineup of very inspiring speakers, provocative content and pragmatic use cases shared by practitioners, the event certainly lived up to the theme of ACT (aspire, challenge and transform).

The 2016 US presidential political contest was brutal. Emotions are still quite raw. I hated it. When emotions run high, everyone loses. Unfortunately, I think the concept of “Demand Driven” is headed down the same path. I feel the discussions are becoming religious arguments about right and wrong instead of healthy discovery (much like this picture of Tibetan monks debating).

Gartner Research just released its new Magic Quadrant for Sales & Operations Planning Systems of Differentiation (S&OP SOD). They say that compared to just two years ago “there have been significant shifts in the relative positions of several vendors.”. Gartner says that the moves have been driven mainly by a significant uptick in overall S&OP maturity of the users it surveyed, which required S&OP solutions to keep pace with increased user demands.
Imagine a world where automation comes together with technology to deliver products without human intervention. An order is placed by a consumer. 3D printers pickup the details and print the finished product. It’s then picked by robots from the shelves, packaged and placed into a self-driving truck. The trucks leave the facility, and drones are automatically dispatched from the truck to deliver products while moving.

by Alexa Cheater The face of sales and operations planning (S&OP) is changing. Gone are the days when sequential, isolated planning and monthly meetings based on out-of-date data are sufficient to drive stability and success. End-to-end initiatives now span beyond the confines of a single company’s supply chain, encompassing extended supplier and customer value networks, as well.

This past April 1st, it snowed over 6 inches here in Boston. It was a cruel April Fools’ joke, but not as cruel as April 1, 1997 when a blizzard dumped more than 21 inches of snow here. It was my first winter back in the Northeast after living in the desert (Tempe, AZ) for more than 5 years. Up until that day, it had been a relatively mild and snowless winter, which is why when I woke up that morning and saw my car buried beneath a mountain of snow, I had no idea how I would get it out.
On Tuesday this week I will present the findings from the recent Supply Chain Insights study at the Penn State Forum. As I worked on my presentation, three themes emerged. 1) Opportunity. The most satisfied respondents on the survey were technologists and academics by profession, Baby-Boomers by age group, and those with the ability to work from home.
Most retailers are facing a shrinking operating “margin for error”. So it’s not surprising that many are looking for more accurate demand forecasting and intelligent stock replenishment. In a report entitled Market Guide for Retail Forecasting and Replenishment Solutions , Gartner analyst Mike Griswold spotlights seven recent trends in this area. 1/ Multichannel retailing is requiring inventory positioning in more locations than ever before and causing retailers to focus on “bottom up” forecasti
In supply chains, omnichannel solutions are often used interchangeably with multichannel solutions. On the surface, both forms of supply chain operations seek to provide multiple sales channels to consumers. However, understanding the elements of omnichannel vs. multichannel supply chain is essential to maximizing profit margins in a tightening economy.

During my time as a p rofessional cyclist, I learned that the more information and technology I could leverage, the faster I rode. As technology improved, the data and insights I collected from daily training optimized my performance. I monitored things like heart rate, power, and nutrition and incorporated all of it into my routine. The more I analyzed and integrated this data into my training regimen, the better I began to understand how sensitive each individual aspect of my lifestyle was and

One message came through loud and clear during Gartner’s recent Supply Chain Executive Conference ; you must ACT (aspire, challenge, transform) now if you want to have any hope in taking your supply chain profitably into the future.
The recent WannaCry cyber attack exploited a problem that exists at most companies today: the use of outdated software systems. In WannaCry’s case, hackers exploited vulnerabilities in Windows XP — an operating system still in wide use today, even though it was originally released in 2001 and Microsoft stopped supporting it in 2014. A similar problem exists with supply chain and logistics software.
I closed the door of my hotel room, and grimaced at the over-flowing trash can. Heaped high with plastic, it violated my principles as an environmentalist. Ironically, in the city of San Francisco which alleges allegiance to Corporate Social Responsibility, I had no option. As a frequent traveler, sometimes the road stories are ones that we would like to forget.

Frost & Sullivan has reported its best practices in technology leadership in supply chain management for the Retail and Wholesale Distribution Industry. The global research and consulting organization starts by saying, “Forecasting demand and positioning inventory has become difficult for retailers in a multi-channel environment.” But they cite three best practices for excelling in this challenging environment: Improved demand planning by leveraging data from order lines, channels, points-of
In a blog post earlier this year, we noted how since the election, more manufactures have expressed interest in reshoring and avoiding offshoring entirely. However, manufacturers are considering other ways of improving factories and supply chains as well. Across the U.S. more companies are turning toward sustainable alternatives and methodologies (like green manufacturing) in boosting competitive advantage and increasing revenue, explains Stuart Hall of Global Manufacturing.
Recently I left a company after 14 years of service. That’s a long time to be at the same place, and it’s uncommon. I experienced multiple changes in leadership, structure, focus, and strategy. During times of change, I soaked up every scrap of a lesson that I could scrounge. During stable times, I knocked out some of the ideas I had accumulated, those “wish I had the time for this” projects.
by Alexa Cheater 4 problems facing consumer electronics and what to do about them. Let’s face it. Working in supply chain is no walk in the park. Unless of course you’re walking barefoot and the ground is covered in razor-sharp pebbles that randomly change location. Then maybe it’d be comparable. The fact is, while supply chain is big business for most companies, it also comes with a whole new set of challenges unique to its many processes, data requirements and functions.

Across the global economy, consumers are wanting more. In fact, it is not just a desire for more; it a demand. Consumer actions are shaping how shippers and carriers interact, ranging from contract negotiation to exploring new technologies. With the rise of Amazon, consumers have also been able to access an endless product array at historic, record-low shipping costs.

Trade promotion execution is but one component of the Consumer Chain, albeit a very critical one indeed. So, in a recent conversation about trade promotion execution with the head of a corporate revenue management organization I asked the question: “Where does the consumer fit in all that?” After a short delay, he answered, “Nowhere really – TPM is essentially a deal between us and the retailer.”.
by Melissa Clow It is with great pride that we announce Kinaxis® has been placed in the Leaders quadrant of the recently published Gartner Magic Quadrant for Sales and Operations Planning Systems of Differentiation. Gartner defines a sales and operations planning (S&OP) System of Differentiation (SOD) as a software solution that supports a Stage 4 or higher maturity S&OP process.
One of the most popular posts I wrote last September became a reality over the weekend. Comparing the headlines (September 7, 2016 and May 12, 2017). By now, you’ve probably read the headlines, like this one from the Wall Street Journal : “Major Cyberattack Sweeps Globe, Hitting FedEx, U.K. Hospitals, Spanish Companies.” It echoes the title of my post from last September: “ The Day a Cyber Attack Brings the World’s Supply Chains to a Halt.”.
