'There is an ongoing debate in supply chain management research about whether or not resource-based theory suggests that supply chain management can be a source of sustained competitive advantage for a firm. Among those who have denied this suggestion is Ramsay (2001) , whereas, in his recent essay, Barney (2012) has argued that SCM can, “at least in some settings”, be such a source.
'I am convinced that we know supply chain management matters, but that we do not have hardcore data to support it. I also believe that the supply chain is a complex system with complex processes with increasing complexity. The system has finite trade-offs that companies know empirically, but don’t understand mathematically. The supply chain index is designed to help companies better understand the effective frontier.

'Qualitative research can be conducted to build theory from field data. The Discovery of Grounded Theory by Glaser and Strauss (1967) remains the fundamental handbook of this approach. SCM journals have recently seen a series of articles advocating for the use of grounded theory, e.g., Mello and Flint (2009, JBL) and Kaufmann and Denk (2011, JSCM). Therefore, I would like to draw attention to three helpful papers.
As we prepare for to celebrate the 5th year anniversary of EcoVadis, I am reflecting back on the accomplishments and remaining challenges. Radical world changes in five years. Could we imagine in 2007, when climate change was the feature story across main stream magazine covers following the release of Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth, that five years later not much would have been done to address the topic?
I find this question comes up a lot as the lines of understanding start to blur the two offerings. At the heart of this confusion is the network. Any time you want to optimize across an enterprise, whether it is inventory or product flows, you need to represent a logical representation of the supply chain. This creates a structure that math can be applied to.

'Who said supply chains are boring? Whenever I tell a friend, colleague or family member about my job as soon as the words "supply chain" are muttered I immediately see glassy eyes followed by a yawn or two. Little do they realize that every time they discard or recycle a carton of milk they are completing the end of the supply chain cycle. Without supply chains consumers would be stuck using products that they had to make or grow with their own two hands.
