by Joe Cannata With Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful storm to threaten the Atlantic Coast in over 10 years that has already brought severe damage to Haiti, the Bahamas and several Southeastern U.S. Starting with Miami, this port primarily handles containerized cargo with small amounts of breakbulk, vehicles and industrial equipment.
For instance, Hurricane Harvey impacted nearly 10 percent of the trucking industry for two weeks and prompted several ports and businesses in the region to shut down, consequently forcing the mass rerouting of cargo to places as far as the Bahamas and Mexico.
A key question for hitting these targets is whether nations like Panama, the Marshall Islands – and other leading shipping nations including Liberia, Malta, Greece and the Bahamas – will actively monitor, encourage and penalize companies not on track to meet the new standards.
This has alerted shipping lines and prompted some to entertain rerouting cargo to New Orleans and Alabama, and even as far away as the Bahamas and Mexico. Another option being explored is for carriers to unload cargo at other ports in order to take in lighter loads upon entering Houston.
